| BRIEF DESCRIPTION A medium sized evergreen or deciduous tree reaching 18 m in height, while the trunk may reach 100 cm in diameter. Heartwood red, very hard, tough, dense and strong. USES The wood is termite resistant and very durable when exposed to the weather and also in the ground. It is used for railway sleepers and similar needs where strength and durability are prime requistes. GROWING PERIOD Perennial. COMMON NAMES Cooktown ironwood. FURTHER INF In Australia, the latitudinal range of the tree is 11-20°S and it occur at elevations between 100-1100 m. It grows on rocky hillsides but probably reaches its best development on creek and river flats. The annual rainfall figures given may not fully reflect the water requirement of the tree, since it often grow on sites where it can obtain additional water from other sources.
