BRIEF DESCRIPTION A herbaceous plant with an edible swollen stembase, with attached leaves. The stem may be up to 10 cm in diameter and may be white, green or purple when fully developed. The leaves often have a waxy appearance. USES The stem is cooked and eaten as a vegetable and the leaves are eaten like spinach. GROWING PERIOD Biennial, normally grown as an annual. May be harvested 50-70 days from transplanting. COMMON NAMES Kohlrabi, Kohl-kohl, Turnip-rooted cabbage, Chou-rave, Kalrabi, Colirrambano, Koolrabi, Choux-raves, Cavolo-rapa, Colirabano, Kalrabbi. FURTHER INF Scientific synonymes: B. caulorapa Pasq., B. oleracea L. var. Caulorapa communis DC., B. oleracea L. caulorapa DC. Koklrabi can be grown fairly well at low elevations in the tropics but the highest yields are obtained from plants grown above 800 m with a variation of at least 5°C between day and night temperatures. Yields are normally between 20-24 t/ha or 2-2.4 kg/m2. | Sources |
