BRIEF DESCRIPTION A herb with a main stem terminating in a large branched inflorescence. It may reaching a height of 2-2.5 m. Some varieties have red or purple leaves and long, drooping flower stalks. USES The leaves are used as potherbs and parts of the fresh plant are used as diuretic. Leaves can also be eaten as a substitute for spinach. Some varieties with large bright-red inflorescences are used as ornamentals. GROWING PERIOD Fast-growing annual. Can be harvested for green forages in 30-50 days. Most types mature seeds in 120-180 days, however in some highland regions it may require 300 days. COMMON NAMES Inca wheat, Quihuicha, Quinoa, Cat-tail, Love-lies-bleeding, Kiwicha, Inca jataco, Ataco, Ataqo, Ataku, Sankurachi, Tumbleweed, Jaguarcha, Millmi, Coimi, Trigo inca, Achis, Qamasa, Amaranto, Achita, Chaquilla, Sangorache, Borlas, Amaranto de cauda, Amaranth, Red-hot cattail, Bush green, Amarante caudee, Coyo. FURTHER INF Scientific synonyms: A. edulis, A. mantegazzianus. Found in the Andean mountains at elevations between 1500 and 3600 m. Near Lima, Peru it is grown at sea level. Adapted to low to medium humidity. It thrives best under short day conditions but can also flower with 12-16 hour days. Photosynthesis pathway C4. Yields may be up to 3-5 t/ha.
